Come Follow Me Lessons & Activities for Kids Lesson 5 | January 27–February 2 | Doctrine and Covenants 3-5

As the momentum of the Restoration began, many were “called to the work” (D&C 4:3). Among those were Joseph Smith, Sr., the prophet’s father, who had also searched for religious truth for most of his life. Eventually, much of the Smith family would be instrumental as God’s servants helping spread the gospel to the world.

It can be challenging to think of the ways we can preach the gospel alone, but when we consider how we might bring hope and joy through Jesus Christ to others as a family, it doesn’t seem so hard. From family scripture study to sharing missionary memories, preparing your family to share the gospel will help everyone know that through living the gospel, God will be with us in “every time of trouble” (D&C 3:8).

Come Follow Me FHE lessons include everything you need to make family scripture study fun for your kids! Empower your children to love the gospel with our engaging activities. Start your free trial now!

THIS WEEK’S COME FOLLOW ME HIGHLIGHTS

Elementary Bundle Lessons & Activities

The lesson for this week is simplified but intentional to focus your thoughts and efforts on the Savior and His birth. We hope you take the time to use the activities provided to incorporate the light of Christ into your lives and into this special season

Mailing a Missionary

Go & Do Activity

D&C 4 is about missionary work. Think of the missionaries serving your ward and those who are out serving in other parts of the world. They dedicate their lives to Jesus Christ and leave many things behind. Spend time as a family writing encouraging words or drawing pictures to mail to missionaries you know. Remember to pray for them daily as well!

Testimony Roleplay

Hands-On Activity

Discuss as a family how important it was there were witnesses to The Book of Mormon. Read D&C 5:11 and focus on the three who bore testimony. Remind your children how it is not always easy to stand for the truth, but it’s important. Act out ways to bear witness and testify using the Witness Testimony Scenario cards.

Fiery Darts of Danger

Coloring Page

Jesus Christ is our Savior and protector. He will keep us safe from danger and harm, and especially from temptations of the world. Ponder D&C 3:8 as a family and discuss the “fiery darts” in your lives. Make a goal to make Jesus Christ a central role in your life to help keep you safe from temptations as you color the fiery darts coloring page.

Go & Do Activity

Read D&C 4:2-3 to your child. Teach that Heavenly Father is happy when we treat others kindly. Being kind makes us happy too! Cut out the Kindness Cookies and the jar label. Tape the label to a mason jar. Explain that together we can work to fill the Kindness Cookie Jar. Do small acts of service together. Write or draw a picture of what you did on the back of each cookie and place the cookie in the cookie jar. After you have filled the jar with the kindness cookies, reward yourself with a yummy kindness cookie as a treat! Use the easy Kindness Cookies recipe to make some cookies as a family. “God Meant It unto Good”

Joseph’s forgiveness of his brothers did not come after they had paid restitution or offered an apology. He forgave them the moment he realized they had changed from their jealous ways when they offered themselves in place of Benjamin for punishment. How overwhelming it must have been for Joseph to see such love amongst his brothers. His forgiveness came with no strings attached: “be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves” (Genesis 45:5).

“The Lord Was with Joseph”

In every moment of Joseph’s story, God was with him. From his brothers’ betrayal and serving Potiphar, to a friend of Pharaoh and the savior of his family, at no time was Joseph forgotten by God. Through the good and the bad, he trusted that God knew who he was and had faith that everything would be all right.

“Let God Prevail”

Abraham’s posterity was promised many blessings of eternal significance, but that didn’t mean everything would be perfect. His grandsons, Jacob and Esau, fought over who should inherit their father’s birthright. Relatives lied to and tricked each other. The prophet’s very own family was dysfunctional, yet that didn’t stop those who were righteous from striving to follow Jesus Christ.
